Tal día como hoy en 1960, se botaba el primer portaaviones nuclear de la historia, el USS Enterprise (CVN-65). Era buque de guerra más grande que se ha entrado en servicio con 342 metro. Alberga dos reactores nucleares. Ha tenido un dilatado uso de guerra, participando en muchas operaciones y contiendas militares. En diciembre de 1998 participó junto con el USS Gettysburg (CG-64), el USS Stout (DDG-55), el USS Nicholson (DD-982) y el USS Miami (SSN-755) en la operación Zorro del desierto, atacando blancos en territorio iraquí durante un total de 70 horas, entre el 16 y 20 de ese mes. La intención de este ataque era dañar la capacidad militar iraquí. Fueron cuatro días de bombardeos sobre Bagdad y otros puntos estratégicos del país árabe, en los que se destruyeron arsenales, instalaciones y sistemas de defensa.

Enterprise is one of seven carriers involved in Summer Pulse 2004. Summer Pulse 2004 is the simultaneous deployment of seven aircraft carrier strike groups (CSGs), demonstrating the ability of the Navy to provide credible combat power across the globe, in five theaters with other U.S., allied, and coalition military forces. Summer Pulse is the Navy's first deployment under its new Fleet Readiness Plan (FRP). The strike group will conduct a scheduled training excercise followed by overseas pulse operations.
